A major actor in the European grain production, France is the first agricultural power of the EU. About 55% of the French territory is used for agricultural production, and french agriculture employs directly, upstream and downstream, over 2 million people. Grains are grown intensively on half the arable land. The main grains grown in France are wheat and durum wheat, barley and maize.
Grains represent a fundamental basic food for both human and animal consumption. Moreover, their use for non-food purposes is constantly growing. The grain sector represents therefore a major economic stake for France, which produces each year over 60 million tonnes grains. More than 45% of this annual crop is sold abroad, making France the world's second largest exporter. It comes even first for flour and malt exports.
At the heart of the French grain economy, the goup Céréaliers de France, directed by agricultural producers, intends to play a dynamic role at the services of all the operators of the grain industry. It is the organizer of
"DÉFI BLÉ", the grain international meeting laying out the prospects of the grains economy for the years to come. It encourages new uses of grains through its Cereal Prize, "le PRIX CÉRÉALIER", a scientific prize awarded each year to European researchers.
